Serial, a spinoffof This American Life (I love that nonfiction podcasts can have spinoffs now), was the podcast phenomenon of 2014. I saw Leigh Sales mention it on Twitter, and was intrigued enough to subscribe. At that stage I think there had been four or five episodes released, so people were talking about it, but people weren’t talking about it the way they would be three weeks later. Forget year-end Best Of lists that weren’t podcast related, Serial had captured the world’s imagination in a way I’d never seen previously. Then again I wasn’t really into Lost when it originally aired, so I have no experience of what happened when the finale aired. But it was the same sort of thing, people were trying to figure out what really happened, based on the evidence and testimonies provided by the people close to the case.
